Review: BATTLE CREEK Pilot
so BATTLE CREEK is Vince Gilligan & David Shore´s new Project. If you don´t know who Vince Gilligan is, you probably spent the last few years living under a rock and missing out on one of the greatest crime shows we´ve seen in a long time: BREAKING BAD. So yeah, now that BREAKING BAD came to an unfortunately soon end, this is Gilligan´s new baby called BATTLE CREEK and it´s about a sloppy but honest cop (DEAN WINTERS) that get´s a new superior who used to be an Agent that does everything according to protocol. This Ex-Agent is brilliantly played by Josh Duhamel, who is mostly known for his roles in the TRANSFORMERS franchise. And to me, he was the best thing about the first episode of BATTLE CREEK. Dean Winters, on the other hand, is terrible and I couldn´t even stand hearing his voice and overall, I am rather disappointed by BATTLE CREEK.
I mean, it´s still very early in the season and the fact that many shows don´t reach their full potential until after the first half of the season (think BETTER CALL SAUL) is a good reminder that you shouldn’t judge about a new series prematurely, but so far, I just didn´t like the show.
I mean, it was ok and some scenes were kinda funny (Ha Ha Funny, not Lol Funny) but Dean Winters´acting was so bad that I am still puzzled how he got the role. I mean, maybe I am missing something but I felt like his acting was not good enough compared to Duhamel. And I never though I´d say that about someone who was involved in the TRANSFORMERS franchise but yeah, it is what it is.
In a certain way, the show is kinda funny and there is some tension going on between Duhamel and Winters, so maybe everything will get better in Episode 2.
This is a CBS show and after the network had to endure plenty of bad news with the cancellation of many well-known shows and not enough newcomers to pick up the boxing gloves so it would be good news for them if the show turned out to be a success. There is a lot of writing potential in this show and the super organized FBI agent on the one side and the chaotic mess of a police officer on the other side have everything a show needs to become great. But so far, I am not seeing it yet and it´s probably mostly because I don´t really appreciate Winters´acting style. As far as interesting storylines go, the pilot already featured a couple of neat ideas but overall, BATTLE CREEK will need to improve dramatically to keep me skipping to a better show. There are so many great shows these days and I didn´t nearly enjoy this as much as I expected to when I first read about it being written by Vince Gilligan and HOUSE creator David Shore. So yeah, ok but could have been better!
