The Returned Manuel Carballo Review

We all know that the Zombie Apocalypse is gonna happen. Question is when! And in this Zombie-Drama from 2013, a Virus has infected large Parts of the Population and turned them into Zombies. But Big Pharma finds a cure; a Serum that can “return” any infected if it´s injected within the first 24 hours of Exposure. But the catch is that it needs to be injected EVERY 24 hours for the Rest of the Infected Persons Life. The Virus never goes away and if the Returned miss only one Dose of their Antidote, they will turn into Zombies that can´t be brought back again.
Within all this Mess, we find Alex and Kate, who are a loving and happy couple. Happy, apart from the fact that Alex got bitten by an infected Person and hence is one of the So-called “Returned”. Since the Government hands out the Serum to all the infected People, all goes well for a while. But when Anti-Returned Terrorists cause civil Riots and disturbances, the Serum, which is made from the brain of infected People, runs out and Alex & Kate desperately need to find some more in order if they want to save Alex´s Life.

Oh well, THE RETURNED is some heavy stuff. Not in regards to Zombie Splatter Action or the Horror Scenes, but to the Drama that goes on between the Characters. From all the Zombie Movies i saw recently, this One surprised me the most because it SO isn´t one of these stereotypical Horrorflicks that lack emotional Depth. I rarely saw a Zombie Movie with such a clever Script, though i have to admit that i felt like the emotional component of the Movie was a little bit too much. I was all pumped up for bloothirsthy Zombies on the lose, but there rarely were some to see. Not that that´s something bad. It´s just not what you would expect so please think of this as a Mix between a Nicholas Sparks Novel and George Romero´s ZOMBIE. The way that the infected People are catalogued and prosecuted awake very nasty memories to the Holocaust or the spanish Flue in the first half of the 20th Century.
The Acting is very good and in respect of the tiny Budget of 5 Million Dollars, the Result was pretty neat too! There aren´t so many Special Effects present but the Ones that were in were absolutely decent. Towards the End, the Script turns a little cheesy but overall, this is one of the best Zombie Movies in a long Time!
